No more NHL? Wicked!

Judging by the torrent of media coverage devoted to the cancellation of the NHL season, you’d think we were a nation of hockey lovers or something.

I’m not one of them. I care about the cancellation of the NHL season about as much as I’d care if handball or race-walking were dropped from the Olympics.

I can’t think of anything more boring than watching hockey. Well, maybe watching Coronation Street. Or watching city council debate a by-law on residential fence height requirements. That would be pretty boring.

Speaking of boring, Don Cherry was on the National last night complaining that he hasn’t received a paycheque in months. Yes! Another reason to celebrate the death of professional hockey. Don Cherry is out of a job.

Non-newsy newsflash: No one cares about a bunch of greedy millionaires arguing with even greedier billionaires.

Long live Movie Night in Canada!

Sarah -- I actually like hockey and miss watching it, but am not sad that the season has been cancelled and am sick to death of hearing about all the whiny babies in the NHL (players and owners both). Seeing Sopel (sp??) climb in to his Hummer (??!!) after going on about how it really isn't about money at all whilst picking his child up at a West Van private school (I was there with another mum) just about put me over the edge.

A post like that is as unCanadian as Danny Williams taking down the Canadian flag over the Atlantic Accord dispute. In a country where we struggle for national identity, hockey is something we can rally around.

Anyway, I hope Marget Wente doesn't read your blog and tell you to get out of the country.

Why you should care if there is an NHL is all the business that benefit from sports teams. Sports restaurants are taking a financial hit as well as local sports shops, consession workers, sports TV stations etc. Everyone is effected.

Now that there's no more hockey, I'll be forced to watch the second-most boring sport: swimming! :^)

A late-breaking story from thestar.com:

NHL, players to meet tomorrow
Feb. 18, 2005. 10:27 PM

Thanks to Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, the NHL season may be brought back to life after all.

If that happens, Sarah, maybe you'll learn not to gloat the next time there's a season-ending NHL strike. :)

Oh God! My heart sank this morning when I picked up the Globe, with a front-page headline declaring that the season might be revived after all!! Ugh! So much for my gloating :)

Look, people, just because I don't like the NHL doesn't make me unCanadian. I respect people who like hockey. I'm open-minded about it. I don't want to judge your lifestyle and if it hockey brings you joy, so much the better!

But it doesn't do anything for me. I love swimming. I'm even going down to Seattle next weekend with some other swim nerds to WATCH a swim meet. I think tickets cost, like, $5. Much better than tickets for an NHL game.

I promise to tolerate your (wrong) opinion, if you tolerate mine ;)

Well, you dodged a slapshot on the hockey front.

Of course I respect everyone's right to their own opinion and realize we each find our own path to boredom Nirvana in slightly different ways. :)

Whew! And by the way, I'm well aware that 99.7 per cent of the Canadian public thinks swimming is boring. I'm okay with that.

But, unlike hockey, the only time you see swimming on TV or in the sports section is during the Olympics. With hockey, golf, football and other such nonsense, it's in our face all the time.

And then people whined when Canadian swimmers didn't get any medals in Athens. Well, if swimming was so important, why hasn't anyone supported it? Those athletes are BROKE. They are lucky to make $20,000 a year swimming.

I'm just annoyed when I hear other athletes (ie. hockey players) whine over MILLIONS of dollars. They're so out of touch with reality it's not even funny.
